Smhsix02 smhsix02.jpg   08/21/2002   403x360

Six, pic 2: a vignette of the mysterious tiger-man sitting on the bed, wrapped in a comforter, glaring balefully. Concerned with getting the fabric folds right, I had my ever-patient, long-suffering husband pose similarly (thanks! :D). Pencil.

Smhsixsplashsm smhsixsplashsm.jpg   08/21/2002   368x444

Six: Part of a splash page for a story by Samuel C. Conway, from Anthrolations Magazine, issue #5 (www.sofawolf.org - check out the gorgeous cover by Tim "Ravenwolf" Joihnson!). The tiger-man is supposed to have six digits per hand, hence the name (five fingers, and the thumb is hidden). This was done last November; I'd hope I'd do much better anatomy if I drew it now. Pencil, some Photoshop shading.

Syn-4will_sanborn syn-4will_sanborn.jpg   10/18/2004   486x648

Thank-you pic for the gifted writer (and great guy) Will A. Sanborn. I was going for more of an old-fashioned illustration look than total realism. Though I LOVE to see all different kinds, this is more of the way I draw anthro-animal art when I'm drawing for myself - mostly animal but with a bit of a personality. RSVP pen, pencil, bit of Photoshop on embossed-frame invite card.

Syn-avarice syn-avarice.jpg   09/27/2002   453x540

Art Therapy - Avarice. Don't let anger warp your mind (things like this help me vent without hurting anyone, including myself). Obviously not an anatomical possibility. RSVP pen, Uniball gelpen, Photoshop 7. BTW: I am so behind in things it's depressing... things are so crazy lately. I'm trying to work through emails now, art trades etc. next. Thanks for your patience!

Syn-biglionpondering syn-biglionpondering.jpg   10/18/2004   576x482

Big Lion Pondering (for Fang, Claw & Steel magazine). I had my husband sit for this, but I slimmed the arms down. I tried to do a different body type than my usual "super-chiseled-muscles" male. Mostly mechanical pencil, with some grey tones added in Photoshop 7.

Syn-bloodiiv syn-bloodiiv.jpg   08/23/2004   504x648

Bloodhound Omega ver. IV: the 4th of 4 pics I did for his creator. I drew what I saw in my mind's eye when I envisioned the character, and didn't worry about trying so hard to be realistic. All anatomy, details based on Bloodi's decription. Overall I tried to make it look sort of like a "sketch come to life", and left some of the sketchiness in on purpose.

Syn-bluewyrm syn-bluewyrm.jpg   03/17/2003   349x720

Nightsky-Bluewyrm! A thank-you pic from last year. I was looking at the very-brightly-colored, almost folk-arty work of Laurel Burch, and was inspired to try a colored pencil piece for Nightsky, who's very colorful herself. Prismas and Design colored pencils on black illustration board.

Syn-csharpy syn-csharpy.jpg   03/17/2003   260x432

An overdue thank-you for Chris Sawyer - here's a harpy-type eagle. There was a pic in Zoobooks of a gorgeous blue-eyed eagle that I'd wanted to paint; here's my interpretation (which is not meant to be any particular type of eagle; this is a fantasy creature). The hand is more human-like on purpose, and the feather is because... I need practice with feathers. I tried a flatter, illustrative style and kept the feathers simple so they didn't "clog up" (the piece is small - about 3.6" x 6"). Pencil, gouache on watercolor stock.

Syn-easterninfluenceiv syn-easterninfluenceiv.jpg   10/18/2004   592x539

Inspired by the Far Eastern Asian and Indian artwork I'd been looking at; these were swimming around in my head for a while. The lower right is sort of like a feline Kuan Yin. The upper left (in the caftan) is hand-less on purpose (I see it as a sort of spirit or... something). Oh, and I do like elephants! I made up the ornamentation on him.

Syn-fcswolf syn-fcswolf.jpg   03/17/2003   482x576

A thank-you piece for the creator of the excellent 'zine, Fang, Claw & Steel (http://webhome.idirect.com/~twessner/fcs/fcs.htm). It's a mix of human and wolf features; I was going for effect rather than accuracy, trying for more of a "classic werewolf" look. The neck-fur is a tip of the hat to my feline shapeshifter in this pic: http://us.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Stephanie-M.-Hahn/werewolves_&_other_shapeshifters/syn-CatHat.jpg, from 1993; I've drawn fur that way for decades. Pencil on cardstock.

Syn-forlex syn-forlex.jpg   09/25/2002   413x542

Anthrocon 2002 sketch for Lex AKA Redstorm - a fellow artist who does some amazing prosthetic/mask work! By request, I drew a dragon, pretty typical of the way I do 'em. If I had more time I would have added more scales, etc., but alas, such is the nature of the 'Con sketch. Pencil.

Syn-forshyboarc syn-forshyboarc.jpg   09/27/2002   388x496

AC 2002 Con sketch for Shyboar. His book's theme was along the lines of "furry feline femmes", and he asked me to draw a tigress; I was very happy to comply. I didn't want to keep uploading B&W Con sketches, and the sketch he emailed me was big enough to color, so here 'tis. Pencil, Photoshop 7.

Syn-foxmagic2 syn-foxmagic2.jpg   04/25/2003   429x648

Fox Magic II: The last of the three Asian-Inspired pieces I did. I used the other half of toned cardstock that I'd used for "SpiritFeatherPony". Drawn a few months back (along with SPF), and colored a few weeks ago. The original is much smoother-looking. The floating ball is something I've drawn for years, and here it symbolizes that the creature is magical, more spirit than animal. I also purposely did NOT make it look like a realistic, 100% anatomically true-to-life fox, to reinforce the idea that the creature is more than it appears. Colored pencils, Photoshop7 touch-up.

Syn-foxwoman syn-foxwoman.jpg   08/25/2004   476x648

Foxwoman for Fang, Claw & Steel. This isn't supposed to be a typical portrait of a sexy vixen; this is an allegory, a symbol. Her dress is a shell barely containing the demon-spirit inside. Her hands are pawlike. The mask represents the human face she shows to the world. Pencil on cardstock, Photoshop gradient.

Syn-graddragon syn-graddragon.jpg   08/21/2002   379x504

Graduation Dragon: My sister graduated from college in 2002 (yaaay!) and, while it was wonderful to see her get her diploma :D, it was cold and rainy... so I drew this on the back of an invitation to keep my fingers from freezing. *looks up at "woodwork.jpg"* Hmm, I guess my default-scribble-mode is set to "fangy". RSVP pen and Photoshop.

Syn-hellcat_head syn-hellcat_head.jpg   10/18/2004   648x438

Originally intended to be a decal for my truck, the color and lighting are flat and rather non-directional in the style of other car decals I've seen. She has 2 extra front teeth per jaw for this particular piece, but that changes from time to time. It kind of reminds me of the "Medusa head" motifs you often see in ancient Greek and Roman art, or perhaps a doorknocker. Pencil, Photoshop.

Syn-hyenabones syn-hyenabones.jpg   08/25/2004   720x496

Hyenabones - originally this was a pen scribble. What was meant to be an underpainting ended up being a finished piece. This was a fun experiment, though obviously this thing couldn't exist. RSVP pen, watercolor, gouache on bristol. (from earlier this year)

Syn-jlion syn-jlion.jpg   03/17/2003   648x591

Still on a Japanese-influence kick, I tried my hand at one of my favorite creatures from Asian mythology. It's my own version; note I wasn't going for a strict interpretation. I used to draw in this stylized, heavy-line and thick-color manner a lot. Prismas and Design colored pencils on Canson Paper (hence the texture).

Syn-lean_demon syn-lean_demon.jpg   08/23/2004   468x720

When I'm feeling under the weather, drawing one of my skull-demons usually cheers me up (or gives me something else to think about, at least). While stuck in traffic (I carpooled with my husband) I drew one on the back of a leftover invitation-card. At work the next day I added in a bit of shading in Photoshop CS.

Syn-leopardzine syn-leopardzine.jpg   10/18/2004   792x249

Leopard with a Magazine (she's reading Fang, Claw & Steel). Pretty typical for me - she's mostly animal-like but has some humanoid features. Spot-wise, I started out being "accurate" but ended up doing my own thing (which is more fun for me). Mechanical pencil on Bristol. (I'm catching up with uploads here)

Syn-lorlescat syn-lorlescat.jpg   08/22/2002   546x516

Lor "Les Claypool" Cat, AKA Klandagi! She's one of the biggest Primus fans I know, so for her birthday I drew the coyougar up with various Primus elements (pose, glasses, braids, bandanna, clay skeeter wings, etc.). The background is a scan of Primus' "Back in Brown" t-shirt (thanks, P!). The first version had Primus lyrics in the background and a logo on her t-shirt, but I removed them for public viewing to avoid copyright infringement. Pencil, T-shirt, Photoshop.

Syn-malice syn-malice.jpg   09/25/2002   376x540

Art Therapy, again. Q: Why do you draw these vile creatures? That can't be healthy. A: Actually it feels great to draw them; the more I scribble, the less tension I feel, and no one is the worse for wear (except maybe my pen). RSVP pen, Photoshop 7.

Syn-mediavallia syn-mediavallia.jpg   04/25/2003   557x684

Mediavallia: Done a while back, for practice with more human-type anthros - also as a LATE entry to Art Challenge #1 - "cliches" (notice the impossibly tight clothing, big hair, companion animal, light shading but dark outlines etc.). Inspired by an Art Deco statue and ladies in swimsuit/lingerie catalogs. Used a mirror for details. Good practice, but I will leave the ladies to the experts! 11" x 14", pencil on Bristol.

Syn-mediavalliadetail syn-mediavalliadetail.jpg   04/25/2003   535x576

Mediavallia (detail): Hopefully she looks less angry in the close-up. She's actually derived from an old mermaid character of mine (Mrii'kirii), but here I gave her the attributes of cats that I love - spots (leopard, jaguar), tufted tail (lion), pointy ears (you name it), etc.

Syn-nightmarevii syn-nightmarevii.jpg   07/17/2003   648x505

Nightmare VII: Drawn after a particularly horrendous day at work. NOTE: this is just MY version of a Nightmare; there's lots of ways to draw them. The eye is supposed to be an empty, shadow-less white - which may not make sense, but then, Nightmares usually don't. RSVP pen on cardstock, Photoshop 7 coloring.

Syn-obsydian syn-obsydian.jpg   08/23/2004   545x717

For Obsydian. Look, I used a reference! - sort of (soon I got bored and did my own thing). I learned a lot about feathers - too late to save the neck feathers, but the wings aren't completely horrible. Watercolor, gouache, knotwork added in Photoshop CS.

Syn-oldtrade syn-oldtrade.jpg   09/15/2002   510x648

So, my hard drive crashed on me, adding to the general stress I've been feeling lately. I managed to save all my files, and found this one; it was an art trade. It's supposed to have extra-huge paws.

Syn-outofthewoodwork syn-outofthewoodwork.jpg   08/21/2002   374x576

No rhyme or reason to this one; it's a sort of stress-relief for all the things happening lately. The lines are satisfying to draw, and thus I'm scribbling, not worrying. It's supposed to look sort of... ugly. RSVP pen and Photoshop.

Syn-panteraatrau1 syn-panteraatrau1.jpg   09/15/2002   497x648

Pantera Atra-U, version 1. For HollyAnn's Con sketchbook, I drew her awesome panther/black leopard character. I wasn't too happy with the anatomy overall in this one, so I re-did it.

Syn-panteraatrau2 syn-panteraatrau2.jpg   09/15/2002   528x648

Pantera Atra-U, version 2. Once again, I re-do something because I'm not happy with the first version. Here's my second pic in HollyAnn's sketchbook, of the snarling pantherine mage. Like the others, it's just a sketch; if I had more time I'd finish it up a bit more. Too bad free time is in short supply lately (as usual). :P

Syn-perfectnight2 syn-perfectnight2.jpg   09/27/2002   578x540

Perfect Night, art trade, property of Amber Holland. He's supposed to have yellow tipping scattered throughout his fur, but it just "jumped" too much so I toned it down. I'm still not happy with the way I draw wolves, but practice IS helping! Pencil, stippled cardstock background, Photoshop 7.

Syn-prowl syn-prowl.jpg   09/15/2002   391x648

Synnabar on the prowl. Here she's just patrolling her territory, where everything apparently looks like petrified wood, and anatomy gets flattened... ;/ (this is actually a sketch I did while waiting for my fiance at the barber's; it was a LONG wait). Tinted in Photoshop.

Syn-shaktiavatar syn-shaktiavatar.jpg   08/23/2004   517x676

Here is my Avatar/shakti, looking very stylized (w/symbolic wings, etc.). I DO like to draw & see finished art, but I don't ALWAYS want or need to do smooth, detailed pieces myself. There are times when I WANT to draw dark and rough and scribbly, both because it helps set a mood, and because it just feels good to move the pencil around like that. Incidentally, I got married last Fall (why my last name changed). :)

Syn-silvermanemk syn-silvermanemk.jpg   04/25/2003   398x648

Silvermane/Maverick: an anthro white lion (done for his birthday present). The two scars on his muzzle symbolize some things he's been through recently. I purposely tried to work a lot of color in there, as well as some human features. The only "true" black is in the pupils; the rest are mixes of colors. Mechanical pencil, Prismacolor and Design colored pencils, some use of a colorless blender, on toned cardstock.

Syn-spiritfeatherpony syn-spiritfeatherpony.jpg   04/25/2003   417x648

SpiritFeatherPony! A quick headshot for the Beatlegryphie. I hadn't used my colored pencils in a long time (this was done BEFORE Silvermane and Fox Magic II) and it was good practice. If I'd had more time I would have gone back and deepened some shadows. Note that it's my own style of gryph - it's not supposed to be photorealistic. Lemme tell ya, white pencil and orange paper are hard to scan well! Prismacolor and Design colored pencils, toned cardstock.

Syn-sunlight syn-sunlight.jpg   07/17/2003   414x612

Sunlight: Based on an older drawing I'd done; I wanted to see how this female feline would look with tawny coloring. Micron pen, colored pencils on parchment paper. Scanned at home on my crappy scanner, unfortunately.

Syn-sunstealer syn-sunstealer.jpg   08/25/2004   504x672

Sun-Stealer: A jaguar-man removes an orb representing the sun from Huehueteotl's fire brazier. He sits in front of an Olmec "were-jaguar" carving. Is he a trickster, a shapeshifter, or something much more? Micron pen, watercolors, gouache and colored pencils on watercolor paper. I tried a different, lighter kind of coloring/painting.

Syn-svdragoncat syn-svdragoncat.jpg   08/23/2004   466x684

Gift art for Sevian Rei. I loved his dragon-cat Irago, but when I sat down to do this my hand & mind wandered and I ended up with something different. I USED to paint slowly and carefully, but lately I don't feel like being so worried about each and every brushmark (partly because of lack of time - I only have an hour or two a day for art, if I'm LUCKY), so I worked the whole thing quickly, all at once instead of concentrating on any one area. Pen, watercolor, gouache, bit of colored pencil.

Syn-synnx4 syn-synnx4.jpg   03/17/2003   709x545

Synnabar x 4: my late entry to the "draw your character as cartoony AND realistic" idea. Maybe it's a fad, but it was a good exercise nonetheless. The cheshire-type Synn has a face I've used elsewhere. Pencil on cardstock, touch-ups in Photoshop7.

Syn-thebribe syn-thebribe.jpg   07/17/2003   504x648

The Bribe: An African Climbing Mouse offers an earring to the Serval who's caught him; he's hoping she'll let him go (I'm a softie so I think she will - what do YOU think will happen?). She's a collector of jewelry, which here is a combination of many different African art and ornamentation styles. The neckpiece was the most fun to draw. Micron pen, colored pencils on Canson Mi-Teintes paper. Some Photoshop to fix the crappy scan.

Syn-tigergodiii syn-tigergodiii.jpg   07/17/2003   518x684

Tiger God III: A further exploration of an older "Tiger God" idea I'd done years back - I was inspired by Tibetan and Indonesian art. Micron pen, Prismacolor & Design pencils, colorless blender, on parchment paper, with some touch-ups in Photoshop 7 to fix the bad scan.

Syn-topios syn-topios.jpg   08/25/2004   485x648

Topios - the zombie-gryph. A Thank-You, done in pencil on a leftover invitation card. Colored in Photoshop CS. (from March - I'm catching up)

Syn-tresspasser syn-tresspasser.jpg   07/17/2003   684x558

The Tresspasser: An ocelot-man is caught tresspassing in another's territory. A departure for me; the anthros I draw for myself are usually quadrupeds, and much more animal than human in build. I wanted to practice drawing the human form and try an unusual pose, and also I was curious to see how an ocelot's coat pattern would look wrapped around a human figure. My fiance posed for me, but I slimmed the build up a bit; my guy is more muscular. Micron pen, colored pencils on Canson Mi-Teintes paper.

Syn-unafurdancer syn-unafurdancer.jpg   09/15/2002   435x576

Una Furdancer! HollyAnn is a huge MLP fan, so I drew a third pic in her sketchbook of her anthro-unicorn-taur like that (sort of), for fun. Sugary-sweet! *teeth fall out* ... but fun. :)

Syn-wertle syn-wertle.jpg   09/21/2002   488x576

Wertle, the color-changing, glass-crafting dragon! She's quite multi-talented and really nice! :D I tried drawing her in a mix of my style and hers, though it ended up looking a bit like something by Phil Foglio... Pencil, with a colored, speckled cardstock bg; color added in Photoshop.

Syn-wertleturn syn-wertleturn.jpg   09/21/2002   408x576

Wertle, again. She had drawn a more "realistic" version of herself on her website, so I tried my hand at it too. Once again I admit it's harder for me to draw cartoony than realistically! More power to all you cartoonists! Mechanical pencil on cardstock.

Syn-ybobtailfinal syn-ybobtailfinal.jpg   02/26/2003   471x648

Japanese Bobtail: my half of a (long overdue) trade with Starfallz. She asked for "something Japanese", and I wanted to try something different, so I went for a very stylized, graphic, almost cut-paper-like look, and took many liberties with the clothing, etc. I wanted a bit of the paper to show through, too. The cleavage wasn't done to be "sexy"; I liked the white space of her chest, but it looked too empty otherwise. Gouache and colored pencil on toned paper.

Syn-ycaerrickhd syn-ycaerrickhd.jpg   02/27/2003   648x494

The Giant Floating Head of Caerrick! Drawn last year for the ultra-cool Skorzy's birthday; the neck-feathers look vaguely scale-like (note: my own interpretation). I tried for a more horse-like head than in my earlier painting of him, but kept it looking predatory. Pencil on cardstock, Photoshop coloring.

Syn-ydustmeat syn-ydustmeat.jpg   02/26/2003   483x648

For Meg Giles! I love her prehistoric cats, and had been reading a great book with new theories on prehistoric big cat reconstruction (calling for a longer, more leonine face) so I drew Meg as such - but with her tiger colors (I still love the "classic style" smilodons too, though). *sigh* SO many people I want/need to do gift art for, still... Pencil, parchment background, color in Photoshop 7.

Syn-yebkitty syn-yebkitty.jpg   02/27/2003   542x612

Ebony... Tigress? The Kitty Queen! Ebony had talked about drawing domestic cats, so I drew her as a tiger-tabby, for fun. I wanted her to look a bit like the smiling, stylized cats you'd see on postcards, etc. years ago. Pencil on cardstock, Photoshop coloring.
